Structure of the HSK Exam
The HSK is structured around six levels, aligning with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) from levels A1 to C2:
- HSK Level 1 and 2 : These levels test basic ability to communicate in Chinese about everyday tasks. Level 1 requires knowledge of 150 vocabulary words, and Level 2 expands this to 300 words.
- HSK Level 3 and 4 : Intermediate proficiency levels where users can discuss a wider range of topics in Chinese and are capable of completing tasks in daily life, academic, and professional contexts. Level 3 requires knowledge of 600 words, while Level 4 requires 1,200 words.

Each test assesses listening, reading, and writing skills. HSK 1 and 2 include listening and reading sections only, while HSK 3 to 6 include writing. Speaking ability is tested separately in the HSKK (Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi), or the Chinese Proficiency Speaking Test, which is often taken alongside the HSK.
Scoring
Each level of the HSK has a maximum score of 300, with a passing score typically being 180. Scores on the HSK are valid for two years from the test date for purposes such as university admission.
