TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test) is a standardized test designed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities.

The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is widely recognized by universities and colleges in English-speaking countries, as well as various professional and government institutions.

Structure of the TOEFL iBT

The TOEFL iBT is delivered via the internet and consists of four main sections, each designed to test a key language skill in an academic context:

  1. Reading : This section tests your ability to understand academic reading material. It consists of 3-4 passages from university-level textbooks, each followed by a set of questions. Test takers have 54-72 minutes to complete this section.
  2. Listening : This section assesses your ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America. It includes lectures and long conversations. You’ll listen to each piece only once and answer questions about what you heard. This section lasts 41-57 minutes.
  3. Speaking : The speaking section evaluates your ability to speak English effectively in an academic setting. It consists of six tasks: two independent tasks where you express an opinion on a familiar topic, and four integrated tasks where you must speak based on what you have read and heard. This section is 17 minutes long.
  4. Writing : This section measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting. It consists of two tasks: an integrated task where you must read a passage, listen to a short lecture, and then write a response summarizing the points made in the lecture and explaining how they relate to the text; and an independent task where you write an essay that expresses and supports your opinion on a topic. The total time for this section is 50 minutes.

Scoring

Each of the four sections of the TOEFL iBT is scored on a scale of 0 to 30, making the total possible score 120. Scores are valid for two years after the test date.

Purpose and Usage

The TOEFL iBT is used primarily by institutions to assess the English language ability of prospective students in terms of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary for university coursework.

The test is crucial for students planning to study at a higher education institution abroad, for scholarship and certification candidates, and for those needing to demonstrate English proficiency for visa applications in some countries.

Preparation

Preparation for the TOEFL iBT involves familiarizing yourself with the test format, practicing each language skill, and taking practice tests. ETS offers various resources, including the official TOEFL iBT tests and preparation materials that provide a good overview of what to expect and how to prepare effectively.

Test Availability

The TOEFL iBT is available at authorized test centers around the world and also as a Home Edition, which can be taken online at home under strict proctoring conditions. Tests are available on fixed dates, and it is advisable to book in advance to secure a date that fits your schedule and meets your application deadlines.
